The Trinidad Hotels, Restaurants & Tourism Association (THRTA) is pleased to announce that on Thursday, December 14th, 2017, the Association’s training and education arm, the Trinidad and Tobago Hospitality and Tourism Institute (TTHTI), joined an exclusive network of international hospitality institutions by becoming a Global Academic Partner (GAP) with the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI), at a signing ceremony at their offices in Orlando, Florida.

Established in 1953, the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) is the training and education arm of the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA), and a global provider of hospitality education, training resources, and professional certification. Securing this important GAP licensee agreement will provide TTHTI with the opportunity to offer employees working in the tourism sector of Trinidad & Tobago, AHLEI’s respected and globally recognized range of hospitality certification courses, including:

• Certified Hotel Administrator (CHA®)
• Certified Hospitality Supervisor (CHS®)
• Certified Hospitality Department Trainer (CHDT®)
• Certified Hospitality Educator (CHE®)
• Certified Guest Service Professional (CGSP®)
• Line-level Training and Certification

TTHTI will launch these certification programmes in February 2018.

As part of our commitment to continued quality improvement, the TTHTI, an accredited institution, will also engage the Accreditation Council of Trinidad & Tobago with respect to incorporating AHLEI’s academic courses into TTHTI’s current range of diplomas and degrees to provide all our students with internationally-recognized curricula and cutting-edge learning resources from September 2018.

The THRTA & TTHTI considers these positive developments quite timely, given the Government of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago’s prioritization and focus on Tourism as a key driver of economic diversification. We also recognize the current efforts underway by the Ministry of Tourism to establish the Trinidad & Tobago Tourism Regulatory & Licensing Authority in 2018 which will have responsibility for quality and standards in all segments of the tourism and hospitality industry and the requisite legal authority to create and enforce tourism sector regulations.

Group Chief Executive Officer (THRTA and TTHTI), Mr. Brian Frontin, noted that, ‘This Global Academic Partnership with the AHLEI would allow the THRTA and TTHTI to support and prepare the human resource bases of all tourism operators, by ensuring they are trained and certified against both local and international operating standards, thereby raising the overall service quality offering of Destination Trinidad & Tobago.

Over the next few weeks, the THRTA and TTHTI will also be engaging the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA) to develop opportunities in providing certification for hospitality staff working within the regional membership bases of National Hotel & Tourism Associations, as well as partnering with the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association Education Foundation (CHTAEF) in support of such initiatives.
